What makes up Alpha Brain?
Alpha Brain is made up of various nootropic ingredients, which are divided up into proprietary blends.
Proprietary blends are when supplement manufacturers choose to group several ingredients together under larger singular dosages. This stops you from knowing how much of each ingredient you’re getting or how effective it may be overall.
The main proprietary blends in Alpha Brain are the:
- Onnit Flow Blend: L-Tyrosine, L-Theanine, Oat Straw and Phosphatidylserine
- Onnit Focus Blend: Alpha GPC, Bacopa Extract and Huperzia Serrata.
- Onnit Fuel Blend: L-Leucine, Vinpocetine and Pterostilbene
We only know the dosages for the total blends, not the individual ingredients.
With this, it makes it harder for you to judge actually what’s in Alpha Brain and how effective it may be overall.
There are some exceptions, some of the ingredients do have their dosages listed – but you never get the whole picture of what’s in Alpha Brain.
This gives you food for thought when it comes to under-dosing, potential side effects, filler ingredients and more.
Proprietary blends are an old trick in the supplements industry in which manufacturers don’t like to disclose their “secret formula” Onnit seems no different with Alpha Brain.
However, now most brands aren’t shy about revealing exactly what they’ve put in their product to deliver the results they give.
Creating your own nootropic stacks from powders and capsules can be a frustrating process. Most people just want it prepackaged and ready to go, there really shouldn’t be any need for a lack of transparency with Onnit. It makes it difficult for us to know if Alpha Brain is going to be a worthy investment.
Is what’s in Alpha Brain good?
On the whole, the majority of the ingredients in Alpha Brain are great. Lots of research can vouch for plenty of the ingredients in here.
However, without knowing the full dosages, it’s hard for us to get a picture of how well they will actually work in Onnit Labs Alpha Brain.
The good ingredients what’s in Alpha Brain include:
- L-Tyrosine
- L-Theanine
- Phosphatidylserine
- Alpha GPC
- Bacopa Extract
- Vinpocetine
- Pterostilbene
Notice how the majority of these are the ingredients which don’t have their dosages disclosed? There’s a theory that some supplement companies do this with their more expensive ingredients to save money by putting the minimal amount in – but still making the claims to that of a clinical dose.
In short, what’s in Alpha Brain is good – but how it’s dosed could be far better.
Is what’s in Alpha Brian safe?
The majority of the ingredients in Alpha Brain are safe to use. However, there is one which could pose a problem given it’s dosage.
The Huperzia Serrata contains 400 mcg of Huperzine A. Huperzine A is a nootropic which can inhibit the enzymes which breakdown your brain’s acetylcholine – a neurotransmitter.
A safe amount of Huperzine A is around 125 mcg, you can see why the 400 mcg in a serving of Alpha Brain may pose as a risk factor.
The benefit Huperzine A is that you have more active acetylcholine which can help focus, cognition and numerous other mental processing speed benefits. However, the drawback is that you’re building up more acetylcholine in your brain than it is used to.
This can lead to a variety of side effects such as:
- Fatigue
- Brain Fog
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Cramps
- Poor Focus
- Mood Imbalance
And more, and those risks increase with higher doses. Going up to levels such as 400 mcg may cause you issues. Alpha Brain may need to be cycled out of your supplement routine on a regular basis to ensure you don’t fall trap to any of these side effects.
So, what’s in Onnit Alpha Brain? | The Verdict
As you can see, there are a variety of ingredients in Alpha Brain by Onnit. The main thing you should watch out for is the dosing from the proprietary blends. It’s hard to tell how much of each ingredient you’re getting.
To make matters worse, there are potential issues with the Huperzine A in this nootropic brain supplement as well.
Keep an eye on all this and stop immediately if you start to experience any unwanted side effects.
