What’s in Prevagen?

What’s in Prevagen?

The active ingredient that’s in Prevagen is apoaequorin. What’s in Prevagen is a protein that uniquely supports and improves brain function. It’s claimed that Apoaequorin was originally discovered in jellyfish and is patented by Quincy Bioscience for use in a variety of products to support cognitive function. This ingredient is safe to consume.

However, further studies show that it may not be as effective as the manufacturer has led us to believe. If you want to see our full Prevagen review, you can find it linked in this paragraph.

The Prevagen Ingredients: What’s in here?

Prevagen contains two ingredients in it’s entirety: Vitamin D and Apoaequorin.

Vitamin D you’ll already be familiar with. It’s an essential vitamin that your body needs for the functions that keep you alive.

Most people don’t enough Vitamin D throughout the day as our bodies naturally get it via sunlight through our skin. Supplementing it is always a good way to help improve the overall balance of D in your system and give your body more of that support.

Apoaequorin on the other hand is a jellyfish-derived protein, in which Prevagen appears to be the only company that uses it.

They have gone as far as creating a patent for the protein and even funding a study around it.

Here are our thoughts on what’s in Prevagen:

Our thoughts on the Vitamin D what’s in Prevagen

Don’t get us wrong, as we’ve said, Vitamin D is a great nutrient to have in a supplement. Technically, it’s a hormone and that can have numerous significant impacts on your health (in the right direction) when appropriate doses are used.

However, does it help cognition? Not really, no. It’s generally more for your hormones and better efficiency when it comes to functions in your system.

We find it odd that a supplement like Prevagen that boasts such potential for brainpower would use an ingredient like Vitamin D when there are far more other effective options for brain power and cognition available.

Is it a good option in Prevagen? For health, yes. For cognition, no. This all goes double if you’re already taking a multivitamin, you could be going over your recommended daily allowance of Vitamin D3 which could lead to issues in and of itself.

It’s not a great idea for Vitamin D to be half the ingredients of what’s in Prevagen.

Our thoughts on the Apoaequorin what’s in Prevagen

The moment we’ve all been waiting for: Apoaequorin. It’s in Prevagen, but should it be?

Apoaequorin is a photoprotein that is found in jellyfish. Claims have been made that it may help to bind to the calcium in your brain and make your overall though more efficient.

However, we have to disagree. There’s only one study out there which vouches for Apoaequorin – and it was sponsored by the makers of Prevagen: Quincy Bioscience.

This leads us to draw suspicion about the actual results of this study, even if the researchers did say that Apoaequorin doesn’t have a significant impact on cognition.

What’s more, the claims Prevagen has made about their product and Apoaequorin in the past has led them into trouble with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) in New York.

There is also an ongoing class action lawsuit against Prevagen over the claims, wherein they need to refund users who feel they were deceived by Prevagen $12 to 30% of their order depending on how much proof of purchase they can provide.

It’s not a great look, and speaks volumes as to what’s in Prevagen and whether or not it actually works.

What’s in Prevagen, is it worth using?

As you can see, when it comes to what’s in Prevagen there are only two ingredients:

  1. Vitamin D: Essential vitamin with numerous health (not brain) benefits.
  2. Apoaequorin: Jellyfish photoprotein that has little to no unfunded research on it which has landed Prevagen in trouble with the FTC.

Is Prevagen worth using? For now, we wouldn’t say so. With the amount of years it’s been around, and the money it has been able to put up for TV ads time after time – the least it can do is look closer at it’s formula and make what’s in Prevagen a little more appetizing to the seasoned biohacker.
